NABR Addresses Wildlife Importation Bill-Research Animal Importation at Risk
On May 19, 2020, Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) introduced a bill tentatively titled the “Global Wildlife Health and Pandemic Prevention Act.” The bill has not been issued a bill number at this time, as Congressional business is moving markedly slower with the current COVID-19 issue. The full text of the bill can be read here: https://usark.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/2020-Global-Wildlife-Health-and-Pandemic-Prevention-Act.pdf.
Ostensibly, this bill is intended to target the wildlife trade and live animal markets for human consumption. However, the bill is so broadly written that it could potentially impact everything from pet importation to research facility acquisition of appropriate animal models. NABR has drafted a letter expressing our concerns, which can be viewed here:https://www.nabr.org/download_file/view/290/628.
