Federal Government Acknowledges NHP Shortage
In addition to recent stories in The Atlantic, USA Today, and The Independent highlighting an emerging shortage in research NHP availability, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (ORIP) issued notice number NOT-OD-20-173 titled “Notice of Limited Availability of Research Non-human Primates.”
The notice states, “Nonhuman primates (NHPs) serve as critical animal models for several research areas during this pandemic. The demand for NIH-supported NHPs and access to biocontainment facilities is expected to escalate as researchers around the country seek to investigate COVID-19 pathology, treatments, and preventions using these models.”

Inquiries to the NIH about this notice can be emailed to [email protected]
Congress needs to hear from you about this increasingly important issue. If you believe American policies should protect the future of research by addressing the NHP shortage, email Congress via NABR’s “take action” link here: https://oneclickpolitics.global.ssl.fastly.net/messages/edit?promo_id=9777.
You are encouraged to customize your email to your members of Congress and further express to them the need for federal action to ensure continued access to NHPs.
