AVMA Policies on Transport of Research Animals and Antiparasitic Resistance Revised
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) House of Delegates (HOD) recently approved revisions to its policies on transportation of research animals and on antiparasitic resistance.
The HOD approved the addition of language that will allow veterinarians to be involved in the evaluation of the best-suited transportation methods for research animals. It also includes language supporting air and ground transportation as possible preferred methods in ensuring overall animal welfare.
In relation to antiparasitic resistance, the HOD accepted the deletion of a list of parasites known to develop resistance to common parasiticides. The delegates also advised veterinarians to consider possible antiparasitic drug susceptibility when selecting their desired use of parasiticides.
