The program of veterinary care mandated by the Animal Welfare Regulations requires:
- The research facility to employ an attending veterinarian who has the appropriate authority to ensure the provision of adequate veterinary care and to oversee the adequacy of other aspects of animal care and use and who is a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
- The research facility to establish and maintain a program of adequate veterinary care that includes the availability of appropriate facilities, personnel, equipment, and services to implement the program. The program must include the following:
- The daily observation of all animals to assess their health and well-being and the use of appropriate methods to prevent, control, diagnose, and treat diseases and injuries, and the availability of emergency, weekend, and holiday care.
- Veterinary guidance to research personnel regarding proper handling, immobilization, anesthesia, analgesia, tranquilization, and euthanasia of the animals and the use of adequate pre-procedural and post-procedural care in accordance with current established veterinary medical and nursing procedures.
