The National Institute of Health's National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) and National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) have both announced grants totaling nearly $45 million to establish new Centers of Excellence in Genomic Science and to support existing centers. The new centers will be at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The existing centers are at John Hopkins University and the University of Southern California. The NHGRI began the The Centers of Excellence in Genomic Science in 2001. The purpose was to assemble interdisciplinary teams with the goal of making important advances in genomic research.
