On August 4, the California Senate amended AB 2296, a state bill originally designed to mirror the federal Animal Enterprise Protection Act. A key provision in the current version of the bill reads: “Any person who enters the residential real property of an academic researcher for the purpose of chilling or interfering with the researcher's academic freedom is guilty of trespass, a misdemeanor.” The bill is scheduled to be considered by the Senate Public Safety Committee on August 12, 2008.
