Policy on Humane Care and Use of Lab Animals
The U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) requires government agencies and awardees to ensure the appropriate care and use of animals involved in research. The PHS Policy is designed to assist with the implementation of, and as a supplement to, the "U.S. Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research, and Training" developed by the Interagency Research Animal Committee.

The Guide
The standard laboratory animal care publication known as "The Guide" plays a central role in the Public Health Service's policy on the humane care and use of laboratory animals. It also serves as the standard of the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) International accreditation program. The Guide's recommendations are enforceable by law under the Health Research Extension Act (1985). It is published by the National Academy Press and is available for viewing online and in several different languages. Printed copies can be ordered from the National Academy Press.
